Bude based video games developer Triangular Pixels, has revealed today that their highly anticipated multiplayer virtual reality title Smash Hit Plunder, will support Kernewek, the Cornish language.
Smash Hit Plunder is a physics-based tear-it-up set in a magical medieval castle and its sprawling surroundings. It allows players to be a powerful mage with the freedom to explore each dungeon from inside a first-person VR view of a gorgeous, classic isometric video game and allows friends to join in using the TV screen.
Katie Goode, Creative Director of Triangular Pixels says “Being based in Cornwall, we saw that it was important to support local culture. Cornwall is a magical place and was of great inspiration while making the game – and some of our levels may be recognisable to the its residents. We wanted to do our part in keeping the local language alive and allowing our neighbours read in their own language.”
Cornish is descended from the Common Brittonic language spoken throughout much of Britain before the English language came to dominate. UNESCO’s Atlas of World Languages classifies Cornish as ‘critically endangered’, and is recognised as a minority language under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
Smash Hit Plunder has already received critical acclaim with Eurogamer saying it ‘Stands a very good chance of being one of the very best (PSVR Games)’ VR Focus saying the game is ‘a true kid in a candy store moment’ and Game Reactor calling it ‘addictive (and) beautiful’
Smash Hit Plunder will be the first VR and first PlayStation 4 title to support the language when it comes out 5th October 2018, thanks to support from Cornwall Council. The game will be available to buy digitally via PlayStation Network, or on disk via Perp Games at retailers.
Smash Hit Plunder will also be publically playable on PSVR for the very first time at this years’ EGX and Perp Games will be giving away prizes to players with the highest scores at the event.
Triangular Pixels were Best Game Developers winners at the ‘EDGE Awards’ in January 2018, featured at BAFTA Inside Games at ‘Rezzed 2015’, won Best New Studio at ‘Develop Awards 2016’, and received a BAFTA Games nomination for innovation.
